The Ricky Rubio Foundation and AEACaP launch ‘Sin tabaco suena mejor’ to raise awareness among youth about the harmful effects of smoking

  • The campaign has been developed on the campuses of the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB), the University of Salamanca (USAL) and the University of Granada (UGR).
  • For Ricky Rubio, “it is essential to develop actions so that healthy lifestyle habits such as a good diet, exercise and avoiding tobacco and alcohol are increasingly present”.
  • Bernard Gaspar recalls that more than 80% of lung cancer cases are associated with tobacco and insists that “quitting smoking” is “the best decision”.

The Spanish Association of Lung Cancer Patients (AEACaP) and The Ricky Rubio Foundation (TRRF) have launched, on the occasion of World No Tobacco Day, the initiative ‘Without tobacco sounds better’, focused on reducing tobacco consumption among young people.

Thus, over three days, students from the campuses of the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB), the University of Salamanca (USAL) and the University of Granada (UGR), have been able to participate in this prevention and awareness campaign about the harmful effects of cigarettes and other tobacco products.

“Our goal is to make it clear to young people that smoking does not bring them anything positive; on the contrary, it can only lead to health problems both immediately and in the future,” said Ricky Rubio.

“In this sense,” Rubio continued, “it is essential to develop actions so that healthy lifestyle habits such as a good diet, exercise and avoiding tobacco or alcohol are increasingly present.

For Bernard Gaspar, president of AEACaP, “it is necessary to remind young people that more than 80% of lung cancer cases are associated with tobacco consumption”. “That is why it is so important to make them see that quitting smoking is the best decision they can make. Their health and the health of those who live with them will notice it immediately”.

“Not smoking any more means a decrease in heart rate after 20 minutes, the return to normal of carbon monoxide concentrations after 12 hours or the improvement of circulation and lung function between the second and third week after cessation,” Gaspar concluded.

Music videos ‘Sin tabaco suena mejor’

Through the collection of videos ‘Without tobacco sounds better’, recorded with hidden camera format, in which initially you can see young people smoking to which a brass band with slow and sad music approaches, it is to visualize that smoking is a negative practice.

These audiovisual pieces for social networks change their tone when the students decide to quit smoking, a moment in which the songs played by the band change to a happy and festive tone, so that smoking cessation is associated with a positive act.

This campaign has been made possible thanks to the collaboration of Amgen.

May 31, World No Tobacco Day

Every May 31, the World Health Organization (WHO) commemorates World No Tobacco Day, dedicated to highlighting the health risks associated with tobacco consumption and promoting effective policies to reduce it.

This year, the WHO wanted to highlight the harmful effects that tobacco companies cause to the environment, their progressive increase and the consequent aggravation of the scarcity of resources and the fragility of ecosystems.

According to the World Health Organization, tobacco kills more than 8 million people every year and destroys our environment, further damaging people’s health due to the cultivation, manufacture, distribution, consumption and disposal of tobacco products.
