Ricky Rubio was awarded with the NBA Community Assist Award due to his active participation in raising awareness of cancer and also to promote basketball as a tool for social transformation. His election comes after devoting himself to campaigns that have largely impacted society. Ricky Rubio was nominated the Community Assist award, November, alongside other nominees: Lebron James and Kevin Durant. Ricky Rubio has been elected thanks to his social and solidary campaigns that had a huge impact among society.
During this year, Ricky has been the ambassador of 5 For the Fight, an organization in which he collaborates with that has raised over 5 millions dollars to research against cancer. Ricky is also an ambassador of Breath of Hope, a foundation that works to fight specifically against lung cancer, the illness that unfortunately Ricky’s mother died of in April, 2016. In her memory, Breath of Hope created a research team to help to fight against lung cancer. In memory of Ricky’s mother’s name, the research team is called Tona Vives Lung Cancer Awareness Fund.
If Ricky wins the award he will become the first Spanish player to be given with this award. To help his candidature the fans can vote from the 25th of April through social networks like Twitter, Facebook or Instagram using one of those two hash tags #NBACommunityAssist or #RickyRubio.
