Luca de la Vega, a 12-year-old boy and Unió Esportiva Mataró basketball player, suffered a very painful left shoulder cramp accompanied with fainting spells. A series of x-rays would reveal a flooded lung and the presence of Lymphoblastic Lymphoma T, a type of cancer that he has been receiving treatment for since May 2018.
What awaits Luca are many long hospital visits that will not allow him to do what he loves most – play basketball. In exchange however, he has made a special friend, Ricky Rubio, who visited Luca at his home with Lluís Escudero, coach of both Ricky and Luca at UEM
When Lluís told the Utah Jazz star about Luca, they decided to go to his house. “Your friend looks a lot like Ricky Rubio”, Luca's coach told him. “It is Ricky Rubio”, Luca responded. Luca, filled with emotion and happiness, didn’t say much, listening to his idol and creating a relationship that can only be produced by two great basketball players, two competitive persons, coming together to win such an important match.
Luca is about to face six months of intensive medical treatment before entering a less aggressive treatment period. He has signed to continue being a member of UEM during the 2018-19 season, and he has a team that is waiting for him. Additionally, he has a friend who took him to the Marc vs. Pau Gasol match in Girona, where Luca entered the locker-room and meet some of the best players in the world. Luca has an amazing family, his parents Eduardo and Anne Marie, his younger 9-year-old sister, Francesca, and a friend in the NBA – his other great team.
